Accessible arrival

Local public transport has always played an important role in the national park region. Unfortunately, not all means of transport are fully accessible.

BUS and FERRY

The public bus service as well as the lines of private providers, such as the Saxon-Bohemian-National-Park-Express, are only partially accessible for wheelchair users. Nonetheless, most busses have space for wheelchairs. For your concrete planning we advise you to contact the bus companies beforehand.

Public passenger shipping – including the Elbe ferries and boats – has also been made more accessible. Most ships can be, at least in part, accessed by wheelchairs, even if some assistance may be required depending on the docking station. For further information, please contact the respective shipping companies or refer to our overview of accessible ferry docks.

TRAM

The Kirnitzsch Valley Tramway, the only tram that runs inside a national park, can only be used to a limited extent. There are no barrier-free access facilities. But if you have strong assistants who are able to help you onto the tram, there will be nothing to stop your ride along the 8 km long track. The driver will be willing to help, as far as possible.

TRAIN

Link Deutsche BahnThe most important destinations are well connected to the public transport network, even though not every stop of the railway is freely accessible to wheelchairs without further assistance. In the overview of accessible stations of the railway you can check whether your destination can be reached free of barriers.

 SHIPPING

You may also wish to enjoy a steamboat ride on the Elbe River: From generously designed boats with wheelchair-accessible salons to paddle steamers – if the river water levels are fine you can enjoy the sight of the rocks from the Elbe. It is advisable to contact the Saxon Steam Shipping Company prior to your travel.

TAXI

For wheelchair users travelling without their own car, there are also various taxi companies with accessible vehicles in the region. We also recommend inquiring directly at the companies for suitable offers.

There remains a lot to be done for the free accessibility of public transport. The rising demand will lead to further improvements in the foreseeable future. Do not be discouraged by some necessary improvisations or obstacles. Travelling by car can not guarantee arriving any sooner!
