  • Unique forest and rocky landscape
  • The national park (NLP) is embedded in the area of outstanding natural beauty (LSG) Saxon Switzerland: NLP + LSG form as a whole the "Saxon Switzerland National Park Region".
  • In the south-east it borders on the Bohemian Switzerland National Park in the Czech Republic which is also surrounded by an area of outstanding natural beauty.
  • These four areas protect a cross-border natural region of
    710 km2 - the Elbe Sandstone Mountains.

Natural region Elbe Sandstone Mountains

  • Cretaceous period landscape formed by erosion (came into being approx. 90 million years ago) made up of quader sandstone in three strata, often overlaid with sediments from the Ice Age, in the boundary areas granite and individual eruptions of basalt
  • Altitude: between 110 m (Elbe by Pirna) up to 723 m above sea level (Snĕžník, Czech Republic)
  • Annual mean temperature: 7 to 8 °C
  • Annual mean precipitation: 700 - 900 mm

  • Approx. 35.000 inhabitants (about 50 per km²) in mainly rural settlements
