The fauna of Saxon Switzerland is marked by reaches of forests and crags uninterrupted by human settlement. This provides local animals with a degree of tranquility and solitude.
Diversity of Species
The mountains are distinguished by a not inconsiderable diversity of species. A large number of unusual species live here as well. It must also be mentioned that equally large and mostly uninhabited areas link up across the Bohemian border on both sides of the Elbe.
Rare Species
A world of animals with rare characteristics and origins of a kind long
since vanished in other areas of Germany has maintained itself here.
Among the examples are Eurasian otters, black storks, peregrine falcons, horned owls and Eurasian pygmy owls, which live here in substantial and stable populations.
